Another Successful Grouse Hunt

Nick and I went out this morning and found some Ruff Grouse, this year has been great.  Milly actually had a point on a single that Harley pointed as well.  Then just down the hill Milly locked up an a big family group.  Harley, Annie and Ranger all came in and honored.   All 4 dogs were locked in on this group.   If I wasn't so set on getting a bird for Milly off of a point I would have taken a picture.  We ended up getting 3 of those.

Later Nick got a Point on a pair of Grouse from Dixie that he shot 1 bird from.  It was a quick morning, back by 9:30.

Highlights of a two Morning Grouse Hunt

Dez and Pepper on Point on a Ruff Grouse!

This year has been an excellent year for hunting Mountain Grouse!  The nice thing is the Dog work has been the best it has ever been from a finding and pointing perspective.

Harley has finally had the light go on and figured out how to find em!  It has been very rewarding, she had one bird that she pointed on the side of a logging road rock solid, the bird was a mature male on the other side of the road.  I could see it and it could see her and it was all flared up and hissing at her.  She never saw it, I moved in and flushed it and shot and she retrieved.  It was one I will never forget.  It turns out after that retrieve, we found a whole family group right by where this male came from.  She pointed another of those that I took, then I just watched the rest flush for another day.

We also had a moment where we got Pepper and Dez out on a logging road and they locked up right out of the truck.  We had a flush right to our left.

Pre Season Dog Walks August 2012

We had some fires by the house this year that burnt about 60 acres.  So the bird finding has been tougher but they are there.  Pepper and Harley on point in the first picture.

Oregon Quail and Pheasant hunt November 2011

Nick, Lee and I went on a short tripo to eastern Oregon this year. These Quail were a short but productive walk. We scattered them up on to a hill where we then had some excellent dog work.

Me with the same quail, I thought I should put the picture up since Iowa State then upset #2 ranked Oklahoma State the next night.

Pepper with the Pheaasant and Quail from a great day. 22 Birds in this picture. This was the first time I have shot my limit of quail. The biggest Rooster in the picture Milly, Harley and Dixie pointed. Milly stayed with it as it moved forward, flushed and I shot it and she retrieved it. The bird had a tailfeather just over 24 inches long.

Veterans Day Hunt

These Birds were taken on Veterans Day this year. Two of the Roosters were pointed perfectly. One of them Milly, Harley and Nick's Brittany Annie all pointed together and Milly had a excellent retrieve right to hand.  Dana and Nick shot one of these birds.
