Freeway Chukar

Took the dogs out for some exercise. They pointed some Chukar just above the freeway. Just a single bird. Kind of strange.

Closing out the 2014-2015 with one last Chukar hunt!

Well it was my first time hunting in Utah. I went with Ryan chasing chukar. It was a abnormally hot day, 65 degrees and wearing t-shirts all day. For February in our neck of the woods, that is not common!  The birds were paired up already. We had numerous great points and some decent backing. The birds were running more than flying.
Nevertheless, we got some good action.

Ryan, with the first bird of the day!

Rose, pointing a covey of Chukar, the only covey. The rest were in pairs.

More from Jazz and Rose

Dogs pointed this one, it wouldn't fly, it ran up hill and I had to run him up.

Big Bird, see previous post for the story.

Listen to the story behind this one....

You know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well this one's worth ten thousand!  We had just about completed a successful first walk for chukkar. If you know what that means you know we were out for a while  and just made it back down the mountain to the area near the rig. We had just decided to head to the truck, eat lunch, and go for more. Ryan Dearing has a dog named Rose that wasn't ready to go back to the truck yet. She headed back up the mountain. Ryan said she would come back so we went to the rig and had lunch. Ryan took time to make a sandwich  and everything. All the while rose made it to the top of the hill. Through the use of the garmin collars we use We determined that Rose was on point over a mile away.
We loaded up the rig and took an atv trail up as far was we could. Putting us within 300 yards of Rose. Of course the 300 hundred yards were straight up the hill. We got my dogs and ourselves geared up and headed for rose. When we got there she was still standing point. This was the only bird that flushed, after 45 minutes of pointing the other birds must have walked off.  Fortunately we got this one as well.
Rose had to work hard to find him after we shot him.
I've seen long held points many times, but this one may top em all.
On top of that, look how big that bird is.  Looks like it is half Himalayan Snowcock.

Harley found that covey again

End of the season in Idaho

We had a great day. Jordan shot his first Chukar. He doubled off a point by Jazz, Belle, and Sadie. Milly  retrieved both birds.
We were also able to get the new member of the team, a nice little English Setter named Abbie, out in the field.
We also ran into a fee coveys of huns. Harley and Milly pointed a pair and Harley found one on her own.
We also ran into pheasant and sharptail grouse.

A few weeks ago I was able to chase Bobwhite quail and Scaled Quail around the grasslands in Kansas. These pictures were all taken by Ryan Dearing. Mine will be posted soon!

Partridge in a Pear Tree...not!

I went looking for a partridge in a pear tree today. I couldn't find a pear tree anyway. However, the dogs did a phenomenal job finding, pointing, backing, and retrieving both Chukar and Huns today. I actually had Harley pointing a covey of Huns and Jazz and Milly honoring. I moved in on the covey, dogs standing, and the covey flushed. I lined up the birds and shot, as I went to shoot the next bird and double, that bird fell before I shot, Dropped two birds with one shot.
The Chukar  covey was above me on the hill. I could here Jazz beeper going off but couldn't get there.  The covey flushed right over me.....

December pheasant hunt

Ok, so my brother made fun of me because my truck tailgate has more pictures with birds on it then any truck in America. So I stopped and took some pictures not on my truck.  Dogs were awesome today, we pointed 2 birds on the way to one of my favorite spots and then pointed and shot the 3rd on the way back to the truck.
I also tested out the new sylmar sleeve on Jazz leg.  She had had a hotspot on there all season, so I tried one out.  Seemed to help alittle.
Picture quality wasn't as good, the dogs and I have to work on our field pictures.
