Upland game in Maui!

Shooting Upland Game in Maui this week....only not with a gun but a camera.  We were at the top of Haleakala Crater hiking  around 10,000 feet and I heard a very familiar sound. Chuk Chuk Chuk ....So I took the camera and went into the rocks.  Yes they were chukkar.  My chase sent a couple birds down into the parking lot.  On the way down the hill I saw more off the road.
We also saw a Black pheasant and a few ringneck's as well.
We also saw a handful of Francolin around the island near our hotel.

'Twas the night before pheasant season...

I was to excited and couldn't resist.  Kuta called and asked if I want to go chase sharpies. We took his new dog Tick out and had a great evening hunt.  Milly had a great find on a nice Ruff Grouse and Tick and Jazz got us into the sharpies.  Harley and Jazz did the retrieving.

Opening day for Phez 2014

Had about two hours to enjoy the pheasant opener.  Then I had to leave on a business trip to Maui.....Yes I said that. We had a great time with my dad, Lee and his boys and of course the dogs and the great outdoors.

Had a "Ruff" day huntin Sharptail the other day...

I went out for a quick morning hunt for Sharptail grouse.  I saw some habitat in a place I had never seen,  while we saw lots of crazy wild sharpies early.  I got distracted by the Ruff Grouse habitat and got sucked in.  Glad I did, we had lots of good dog work. Several points, could have taken a few more, but passed.  Felt good with 3 I got.  A couple times all 3 dogs were either pointing or honoring each other. Found some springs and good cover, the birds were near those of course....

Post hunt picture of Jazz.  She was wrecked...

First year with a Indian Reservation license...

Finally did it, bout a local Indian Reservaion hunting license. There is supposed to be a lot of pheasant for me to hunt.

Jazz got in on her first Rooster.  Milly and Harley have been sharp as can be, Pointing and retrieving.  I've seen a lot so far.  A lot of really young birds.  Some I couldn't tell what they were yet, hen or rooster?

Hopefully many more pictures to come....

Sharptail hunt day 2

Took the dogs looking again for sharpies.  Once again, got into Huns, sharpies, and the craziest point of the day was when Milly pointed on what I was sure was a ruff grouse. When I moved on and kicked the brush I almost got ran over by a deer.

2014 Sharptail hunting

Started the year off great. Jazz pointed and retrieved her first Sharptail grouse.  She also did the same about five minutes later on Hungarian Partridge.  A limit of sharpies and a Hun and back to work I went.

Ruff Grouse, King of the Woods

It was a quick short hunt in the heat of the day (mid 80's).  The 3 Brits pointed and worked this ruffie several times.  It would flush but I was never in the right place.  Finally the last time Milly and Harley pinned him just right, just before I took him.  One of the larger more mature ruff grouse I have taken.

A Fine Saturday night Grouse Hunt

WWe had a great night with all the dogs.  Found a nice Elk Shed and some great grouse wingshooting. I used to hunt grouse because nothing else was open yet...NOT ANYMORE. I love being out hunting grouse in their native habitat.

A quick hunt before leaving for work.

I had about an hour before work today, saw 2 ruffs, 3 pheasant, and a deer.  Harley pointed the ruff I took on his first flush, Jazz on the 2nd.  I finally shot him on the third flush.

Blues and Ruffs

Went back to my old stomping ground and had a great morning hunt.  Milly pointed an old mature ruff and Jazz and Harley both honored. I had to backtrack through the nasty cover to get to the bird.  They held for several minutes.
Later Milly and Harley pointed some blues. I took 2 and could have shot 3. Jazz retrieved her first Blue to me wE saw 7 ruffs and 4 blues and heard some more flushes.
