Thanksgiving Hunt #3. The Thanksgiving tradition.

Travis with his1st Ruff Grouse
We went out on our annual family Pheasant Hunt for Thanksgiving morning.  We got into some Ruff Grouse, a few Pheasant (only 1 Rooster that Nick shot over an Annie and Harley point) and Hun that Travis shot over a point by Harley.

Dad and the Millward boys, 2 Ruffs, a Hun and a Rooster.

Thanksgiving Hunt #2 with the kids!

Limit of Pheasant I shot!

I took my kids out for a morning hunt to a few of my favorite short easy hunts.  We got into a lot of birds. Riley missed a few and had a misfire on an excellent point by Harley.  Alex's dog Jewel had a great find on a Rooster I shot.  I also shot a nice Rooster over Milly.  Even though the kids didn't get any birds, it was a blast to get outdoors with them.

Thanksgiving Week Hunt #1

Lee, Alex, and I had a great morning Pheasant hunt and afternoon Grouse hunt. Right out of the truck Harley pointed some Roosters for us and Jewel had a great retrieve. We even got into a few Ruff Grouse, it was a beautiful day! One of the roosters I shot had a 25 7/8 inch tail-feather.

Unproductive Point

It happens sometimes, I kept releasing Milly and she would run around the tree pile and then spot and honor Alex's dog Jewel. I finally broke down and took a picture. There was probably some big Ol rooster rooted deep in there but we never got anything out.
We eventually shot a few Huns and I hit a Rooster on this trip, but I didn't take any pictures. I did spend a good portion of the night cleaning burs out of the dogs.

November Ruff Grouse

Went out for a Pheasant this morning. Harley surprised me with a great point on a ruff grouse. Shot him off the wing on a long shot. Took Milly up to where the first birds came from and she pointed a big Ruff that hopped up in the tree. Sent him to the taxidermist. It was a fun moving hunt. The dogs pointed a few hen pheasant and the roosters got out wild. But a worthwhile walk.

Montana Pheasant Trio

Pepper and Harely with the 3 Roosters

The Double!
Shot a limit of Pheasant in Montana the other morning.  It was a magical hunt.  You can read the story more in the Post below.  Here is some of the Picture Highlights.

Milly with the Roosters!

Montana Roosters Retrieving photos

This first Rooster is a Bird Harley pointed deep in the cattails out of the snow.  I was shocked how long she held point while I stumbled through the snow to get there.  When I go there she advanced in and then locked up again.  The bird still wouldn't flush, I told her to get in there and she did.  Pepper rushed to the retrieve.
The 2nd bird is actually the 3rd bird shot of the morning off of a double I got.  Pepper locked up in the sagebrush, I had to kick him out, he was holding tight.  Harley was on point on another bird right near by.  As I shot the first, the next flushed and I shot him.  Pepper retrieved one, Milly retrieved the other, as you can see in the pictures, they all wanted in on the retrieves.

First Prairie Chicken

It took a lot of time and effort to finally find one of these birds.  We got lucky and spotted some flying in to feed.  Once again, we failed to get good dog work on these birds.  But it was good to scratch them off the list.

First Bobwhite

Well I finally shot a Bobwhite Quail.  I wish I could say that we had great dog work to get this little guy.  Nevertheless, I made a great passing shot on a covey Lee, Dad, and Roger pushed off a fence line.  Beautiful Bird!
